This volume is now 125 years old and in exceptional condition from cover to cover. Below are just a few of the topics discussed: the ancient mysteries, mythology, reincarnation, Freemasonry, the Knights Templars, the Irish Druids, sorcerers, the antiquities of Freemasonry, the soul, the gateway of death, the German Steinmetzen, the craft guilds, medieval masonry, the Grand Lodge, the pagans, the Celtic Druids & pagans, ancient Egypt, superstitions, the Temple of Solomon, ancient legends, Dionysius, Bacchus, rites & ceremonies, the great god, Osiris, secret fraternities, Pythagoras, Hermes, the brother book of 1563, mysticism, superstitious practices, & much more. Beautifully illustrated with stunning engravings, all in impeccable condition. Includes history dating back to the 16th century. Written and compiled by the Senior Grand Deacon of England, the Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree, & the Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Scotland.
This edition of The History of Freemasonry is exceptionally beautiful. I've owned several editions over the years, but this particular printing is, without question, the most well-kept and stunning one I've ever owned or seen. It provides an in-depth history of the Masons dating back centuries. While its focus is mostly on the Freemasons, its content delves much deeper, including passages on spirituality, the esoteric, and even ancient mythology. A masterful book and a hard volume to come across. It is not only a lovely book but also a historically important one. I would snag this before it's gone. It has an 1898 stamp; however, it may, in fact, be older. Google Books show a date of 1885 for this publisher; regardless, it is a gem of a find.
Robert Freke Gould (10 November 1836 – 26 March 1915) was a soldier, barrister, and prominent Freemason and Masonic historian. He wrote a History of Freemasonry (6 vols.) (London: Thomas C. Jack, 1883–1887), which remains a standard reference work on the subject.
This book originally came in a set; this is the very hard-to-come-by Volume 1.
